Concorde Air Charter Travel

Author: Colleen Wilson

When it comes to elegance in the air, the reputation of the Concorde is second to none in the entire air charter industry. This charter jet is a like an majestic bird gliding in for a landing. The Concorde, king of all aircraft, flies at 61,000 and travels 1,350 miles per hour. To actually see the Concorde flying overhead, you need advanced warning and a perfectly cloudless sky.

The Concorde, now owned by British Airways, has a wingspan of just over 83 feet and a length of 204 feet. It’s a pure masterpiece of precision, speed, and performance. The crème de la crème in jet charter flights without doubt.

The most interesting thing is this jet is available for charter. Yes. You can reserve one of the 100 available seats, served by its crew of nine for just under $13,000 and have the magnificent opportunity to travel deluxe first class, five star Concorde. Interestingly enough, the plane has two passenger cabins and one deck, and over 2.5 million have flown under its wing. How many precision miles has the Concorde flown? Just over 300 million.

The first British prototype Concorde took flight on April 9, 1969 and since then has increased its air charter service from London to Bahrain and then one month later added London to Washington in 1976. Just one short year later on November 22, 1977, the Concorde began its steady stream across the Atlantic to New York City.

Just about 20 years later, the Concorde made history when it made the fastest crossing in history – 2 hours, 52 minutes, 59 seconds from New York to London on February 7, 1996. In their 25 years of air charter service, there was only one time the Concorde fleet was suspended (August 15, 2000 until November 9, 2001) due to the aftermath of the Air France Concorde accident; all Concorde jets were grounded and thoroughly inspected.

What do you think the Who’s Who passenger list looks like from this prestigious bird? The likes of: Diana Ross, Paul McCartney, Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, Prince Philip, Princess Diana, Joan Collins, Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair, David Frost, Cliff Richard and Elton John.

With JetBlue providing a television set for each passenger on its budget fares, it is most interesting to note the Concorde flies so fast, there’s no time to watch a full length film so free movies aren’t part of the $13,000 ticket. In fact, one reporter’s supersonic flight arrived with more than half of his planned reading material still unread “because of the shorter air time and the excitement of it all.”

Concorde passengers have a separate high-speed check-in and baggage delivery, which makes for a prestigious land departure and arrival.
According to one passenger, “The cabin interior seems narrow compared to wide-bodied jets, but the two pairs of seats flanking a central aisle are plush and spaced well enough. Tall people prefer the aisle seat because of the inward curvature of the cabin. The arrival at Mach 2, reached at 51,000 feet, takes about 40 minutes. A sensation of speed is hardly present except when passing through clouds, and the only way to determine speed is via a video monitor on the forward bulkhead. (Mach 2, about 1,350 mph at 60,000 feet, is twice the speed of sound.)”

For regular charter flyers used to subsonic air travel, the Concorde flight is over all too soon. It is without a doubt, an experience of a lifetime. Flying the Concorde is a throwback to an earlier more elegant era of air travel. What does the average passenger wear? A tuxedo, elegant formal dress or what? In this day and age, chic comfort is the rage.
